On the way home after climbing Sheffield Pike, I reached the top of Kirkstone Pass and had a thought about making the most of the day. Many years ago, I went up Kilnshaw Chimney and maybe this was a good opportunity to have another look. It's not a proper fellwalk, not when you start more than half way up.

Red Screes
It's 12:20hrs and if I get home too soon, I may find jobs to do or a lawn to mow, so I needed to occupy an hour or two.
Kirkstone Pass
Kilnshaw Chimney is clearly visible from the road. I chose to avoid most of the scree by plotting a route way to the right of the loose rock. I felt a little self-conscious as watchers with binoculars were sat in the carpark looking out for walkers on the Patterdale Boundary Walk.

The narrow gully of Kilnshaw Chimney is quite an adventure for the average fellwalker. Probably best not to take dogs, but agile hounds will be OK with a little help at one point.

Red Screes Trig Point
Fifty minutes and I reckon I was travelling quite slowly. This is not quite the highest point.
Red Screes Summit
Slightly higher than the trig point. Resting walker is on the Patterdale Boundary Walk.
Little Hart Crag
The only place on this website that you can currently find a photo of Little Hart Crag - it's that little grey protrusion in the middle ground, right-of-centre.

Walkers: Just me.
Time taken: 1hrs 40 mins over a distance of a mile and a half. Dwell time on top!
Route: Kirkstone Pass car park (free), Kilnshaw Chimney, Red Scress Summit, partly repaired path back down to the Pass.
Weather and conditions: Sunny and Warm.
Greetings Count: Nobody on the way up, proper fellwalkers on top - I was an imposter. My trainers and just a water bottle for luggage must have given the game away.
Richard's Refreshment Review: Tea and Tiffin at The Station House Tearoom, Kirkby Lonsdale. Very good and ideal if you are creative and fancy a bit of painting - I might have a go one day.
